Future of Work Reporting Fellowship 2026 ($5,000 Funding)

Application Deadline: July 24, 2026

The Future of Work Reporting Fellowship 2026 is opening space for journalists to dig deeper into how economic change is reshaping communities across the United States. Backed by New America and Work Shift, the program focuses on stories that go beyond headlines, highlighting how investments in technology, education, and workforce development are affecting real lives.

At a time when conversations around artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and economic transformation often stay at a high level, this fellowship takes a different approach. It encourages journalists to report from the ground inside cities, towns, and local communities where these changes are actually unfolding.

The program is designed for early- and mid-career journalists who want to explore how major public and private investments are influencing job creation, access to opportunities, and long-term economic stability. Rather than focusing on national narratives alone, fellows are expected to produce place-based stories that reveal who benefits from these changes and who might be left behind.

Selected fellows will work closely with experienced editors and gain access to expert sources, helping them strengthen both the depth and reach of their reporting. For journalists looking to build a strong portfolio in economic or policy reporting, this kind of structured support can significantly elevate the quality and visibility of their work.

The fellowship runs from September 2026 through August 2027, giving participants enough time to develop meaningful, in-depth stories rather than rushed coverage.
