For early-career researchers in Africa looking to expand their global research footprint, this is a powerful opportunity. The ARUA Early Career Research Fellowship 2026 offers a chance to collaborate with leading scholars while advancing impactful research across top African and international institutions.
The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), with support from the Mastercard Foundation and Carnegie Corporation of New York, is offering up to 42 fellowships to outstanding early-career researchers. The program is designed to strengthen Africa’s research ecosystem by connecting promising scholars with world-class Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs).
Selected fellows will spend six months at a host institution, working closely with experienced researchers on high-impact projects. The next fellowship cycle runs from September 2026 to February 2027, offering a focused period for deep research, collaboration, and publication.
This is more than a research placement, it’s a career-defining experience. Fellows are expected to contribute to meaningful academic outputs, including publishing in high-impact journals, presenting research findings, and building international collaborations that extend beyond the fellowship period.
Importantly, ARUA is strongly committed to gender inclusion, with at least 70% of positions reserved for female candidates.
Eligibility
To be considered, applicants must:
- Be an African national
- Hold a PhD in a relevant discipline
- Be within 5 years of completing their PhD
- Be 35 years old or younger at the time of application
- Be a faculty member or researcher (ARUA and non-ARUA institutions eligible)
- Have a strong academic and research track record
- Be working on an ongoing research project aligned with ARUA themes
- Be available to spend six months at a host institution
- Demonstrate potential for international research impact
Applicants will also need to submit key documents including:
- Cover letter
- Academic CV with referees
- Letter of support from home institution
- Proof of PhD
- Research concept note (max. 1,500 words)
- Two academic writing samples
- Valid passport biodata page
