The Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE USA) is currently accepting applications for its part-time Fall 2026 Internship. Founded in 1975, JCIE USA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting understanding between the United States and Japan through policy dialogues, research initiatives, leadership exchanges, and collaborations that address shared societal challenges.
Based in New York City and Washington, DC, the organization works closely with experts, policymakers, and civil society leaders from both countries. As an intern, you’ll have the opportunity to observe how international cooperation happens behind the scenes while developing professional skills that can strengthen your future career prospects.
The internship is expected to begin as early as September 1, 2026, and continue through December 2026, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.
Interns will play an active role in supporting the organization’s day-to-day activities and flagship programs. Responsibilities may include conducting background research, assisting with event logistics, taking notes during meetings, supporting communications efforts, and helping maintain office operations.
This is more than just an entry-level position. It’s an opportunity to learn directly from professionals working at the intersection of international exchange and policy development while building transferable skills in communication, research, project coordination, and digital engagement.
Internship Location
Candidates must already be based in one of the following locations:
- New York City – Hybrid arrangement (in-person and remote).
- Washington, DC – Fully remote.
Eligibility
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Be an undergraduate student or recent graduate.
- Be majoring in a relevant field such as:
- Japan Studies
- East Asia Studies
- International Relations
- Related disciplines
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in:
- International affairs
- Developments in Asia
- Japan and U.S.-Japan relations
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Be detail-oriented, organized, and able to multitask.
- Work effectively within a team and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
- Have experience using Microsoft Office and Google platforms.
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Hold a valid U.S. tax identification number (such as an SSN).
Preferred Skills and Experience
While not mandatory, the following qualifications will strengthen an application:
- Proficiency in Japanese (written and spoken).
- IT management experience.
- Experience taking notes and transcribing meetings.
- Event and program logistics experience.
- Familiarity with MailChimp or similar email marketing tools.
- Experience managing social media and websites.
- Knowledge of WordPress.
- Experience using design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Basic HTML/CSS skills.

- Compensation of $17 per hour (New York minimum wage rate).

Work Schedule

- No later than September 7, 2026
